About the Program

This multisensory reading, spelling and penmanship CD-ROM program builds an association between symbols and sounds in the English language through self-paced repetition. It utilizes the close association of visual, auditory and kinesthetic elements to help students improve their language skills.

The beginning of the program assumes the student does not know the letters of the alphabet. The program then proceeds to teach all the skills one needs to read on a sixth grade level.

Extensive practice in reading, spelling and penmanship throughout the program.

Specific language skills taught include suffixes, prefixes, the six syllable types, consonant digraphs and blends, diphthongs, singular and plural nouns, apostrophe and contractions, punctuation, exceptional words (words to be memorized), sentence and paragraph structure, etc.

Description of the Program

Students and teachers can move to different lessons/modules in the program by utilizing the progress report. They can click on the "DOWN ARROW" after the short introduction. This will take them to a progress report. The names of the modules, in the program, are located on the left side of the screen (letter, reading, spelling, writing, language and dictionary lessons). When you "click" them, the voice will identify the name of the module. Next to each module are numbered buttons. These numbers correspond to the numbered lessons in the table of contents, in the manual, inside the binder. One may click on the numbered button and go right to the lesson of their choice. Teachers can decide if they wish to have a student follow the sequence, as it is presented on the CD-ROM, or may decide to use the CD-ROM to reinforce a particular reading skill which was just introduced in class.

Most students who can not remember the sounds of letters when they are taught reading using traditional methods, are successful in retaining these sounds if they learn a "key word" for each letter of the alphabet. They must SEE the letter, they must HEAR the sound of the letter, they NEED to learn the key word for the letter and they must FEEL the letter as they trace it on their paper. Students learn the sounds of the letters using a multisensory approach. (Auditory, visual and kinesthetic modalities are stimulated simultaneously)

After the student has learned the key word and sound to seven letters of the alphabet, he/she begins blending the sounds together to read words. As a student's reading level improves, he/she practices blending words which are progressively more difficult to read. The lessons which teach dictionary skills enable students to read any pronunciation guide in their dictionary.

In addition to serving as the kinesthetic component in teaching the association between symbol and sound, the writing lessons also teach letter formation and spatial orientation.

After the student has learned the sound of 20 letters, he/she is asked to spell words composed of these letters. The sound of each letter in the word is given, one letter at a time. The student "clicks" the letter which represents each of the sounds he/she hears until the word, in question, has been spelled on the screen. As in the reading lessons, the spelling lessons become progressively more difficult as the student moves through the program.

The outstanding graphics, in the program, facilitate the instruction of concepts which many students find challenging. For example, they can see words dividing into syllables and they SEE how pronunciation symbols can guide them in pronouncing an exceptional word.

There are seventeen dictionary lessons in the program. These lessons are particularly important when students attempt to decode exceptional words. (words which are not spelled the way they sound) Students learn the meaning of each pronunciation symbol found in the dictionary which then enables them to read the pronunciation guides found next to each word in their dictionary.
